I READ your report on the potential for Scottish spaceports with interest, as I have recently been in California on business and met representatives of the California Space Authority ("Anger as RAF bases are axed from shortlist for spaceport", The Herald, March 4.

It will be a while yet before we receive the full specification for a UK spaceport from the UK Government, but California's approach is markedly different from that reported in Scotland.

The California Space Authority is governed by a state-wide board of directors, representing the commercial, civil, defence and security interests of California's diverse space enterprise community and across all four domains: industry, government, academia, and workforce, with a strategic business plan that covers the aspirations of government and private sector together and as partners.

I have yet to see a similar strategic and long-term approach adopted in Scotland.
