WITH the clocks having changed last weekend and the winter looming, perhaps it is time to question the energy suppliers and their policies regarding charges.

The big utility companies continue to show no loyalty to their customer base: they charge higher tariffs to those who do not pay by their preferred system of direct debit.

On taking up their offer of a card system you swiftly learn that you are paying a higher tariff than new customers. This results in an added burden to many on low incomes and benefits, the very ones the utility companies should be assisting.

Our struggling charities do a great job in supporting many who are unable to feed their pre-paid meters, but what can the utility companies do?

A reduced tariff would be in order for pensioners and the disabled and that could be enhanced with a level playing field on tariffs regardless of payment method. Taking those steps could be a great contribution to the finances of the country, as it will prevent many becoming unwell due to sitting cold this winter.
