With the death of Nelson Mandela the world has lost a man of peace and high moral integrity.

When freed after 27 years in prison put his freedom at the service of forgiveness and reconciliation - an example to us all. Scotland can be proud of the support it gave to the people of South Africa in their struggle against apartheid.

As I listened to the speeches from his home village at the final celebration of his life, my thoughts were not in South Africa but in Palestine. I realised that Nelson Mandela's great work was unfinished. Apartheid is still alive and flourishing in that unhappy place called the Holy Land. We owe it to his memory that we complete his work.

Nelson Mandela championed the rights of the indigenous population of Palestine and claimed that their treatment at the hands of the Israelis was worse than the that meted out to the black population of South Africa by the whites.

In March of this year Clackmannanshire Council took the humanitarian decision that it would resist any action that gives political or economic support to the state of Israel. This motion is in the spirit of Nelson Mandela who spent his life fighting racism. In fighting apartheid and ethnic cleansing in the Holy Land we follow in the footsteps of a truly great human being.
