I WROTE earlier that Transport Scotland has introduced live road signs giving up-to-date information on journey times on the A9 (Letters, September 1).

I noticed them working on my way up to Invergordon this week. They failed miserably in their accuracy, perhaps because a queue of some 30 vehicles was stuck behind two unladen articulated car transporters meandering past Dunkeld at 38mph.

What would really be an improvement to road safety would be the compulsory use of headlights on that and other trunk roads.

Coming back down from Invergordon in off-and-on torrential rain and twilight, drivers were not putting on their lights. Some were using only sidelights that wouldn't light the inside of a coal bunker. HGVs, supposedly driven by professional drivers, were as much at fault. If drivers were to let themselves be seen, this would help to cut accidents on the A9.
