While I bow to Brian Mackenzie's superior knowledge about the safety of Trident, I must take issue with one aspect of his letter (Whistleblower no Trident authority, 31st May 2015).

He states that: "Each and every one of [William McNeilly's] complaints and observations can be explained logically ..." This may well be so, but a 500-word reply by the Ministry of Defence to the 18-page document compiled by William McNeilly is hardly sufficient to give that explanation.

These weapons of mass destruction must not only adhere to the strictest safety rules but also be seen to do so. The very least that the people of Scotland and the rest of the UK deserve is to have every point brought up in that document investigated comprehensively and publicly.

Perhaps the starting point should have been to have had a sufficiency of Unionist MPs in the Westminster chamber to debate the issue as opposed to the paltry few that bothered to turn up.
