University pay

Your report of the row about salary increases at Glasgow University simply illustrates what has been happening to universities for the last 20 years or so ("Row brews over university pay", The Herald, December 14).

The cult of management has infected universities so seriously that students, academic staff and technicians seem now to be mere obstacles to administration.

The function of a university now appears to be to to provide employment for managers.
