Unpaid work will not solve youth unemployment

The Government is to create unpaid short-term posts so that some unemployed young people will have better chances of gaining meaningful employment ("Tesco U-turn over unpaid work scheme", The Herald, February 22).

Will it work? Probably for those who gain that experience, but there is a snag.

Those who benefit will be to some extent at the expense of those who do not have that experience. It does not create any new jobs, only giving a particular group a possible interview advantage.
