Well done on an SNP victory, but how will party pay for its policies?

I must congratulate the SNP on its Holyrood victory, and on seeing off three opposition party leaders.

But how does one explain the enormity of its triumph? Several thoughts occur (“Tory leader Goldie quits after ‘seismic’ election”, The Herald, May 9).

The awfulness of Scottish Labour is part of the explanation. Most of its candidates were products of the machine politics on which the party, particularly in the west of Scotland, has the original patent. And it is these candidates who have now won regional list seats, and have replaced the party’s former leading lights who lost their constituency seats. Alex Salmond and his team appear bright and competent in comparison.
