I THOUGHT I was the only one.

Thank you, Russell Leadbetter, for your manly admission of crying during the final scenes of Field of Dreams and demonstrating that emotional sensitivity and a proclivity for paper hankies while watching movies are not the exclusive rights of the female ("Let's hear it for movie composers", The Herald, July 1).

John Wayne is not the most obvious candidate for wringing a tear from a manly eye, yet I must admit to tearing up while watching She Wore a Yellow Ribbon when his cavalry troop present his character (Captain Brittles) with a watch on his retiral. Similarly, in Zulu, after the battle when Colour Sergeant Bourne (Nigel Green) is calling the roll, my vision becomes decidedly blurry.

And don't get me started on the final scenes of ET and AI when Spielberg pulls all the emotional strings and sends the share price of Kleenex rocketing.

FOR lovers of movie music there is a good programme on each Saturday afternoon, at 4pm, on Radio 3, called Sound of Cinema. There are two extremely good jazz programmes after it too.
