I AM bound to say that I am content with my libations of single malt the way they are, although, of course, no two single malts are exactly the same ("One giant leap for dram-kind", The Herald August 29).

The development of single malt, as many are aware, has progressed from a small part of the whisky market to become now a significant contributor to sales of whisky throughout the world.

I read with some surprise that some people seem to seek to spend a lot of their time doing things to malt whisky rather than drinking it . Ardbeg Distillery's plans remind me in a way of the 1959 Lonnie Donnegan song Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour On The Bedpost Overnight? Do I want to know what it tastes like after orbiting the earth at 17,227 mph and touching down in Kazakhstan next month? Perhaps not, because I would rather that it spent its time anaesthetising my taste buds. Anyway whatever your predilection, slainte mhath.
