The Prime Minister has announced the names of the six other members of the public inquiry under Lord Justice Leveson, which will investigate the News of the World hacking scandal and other related matters.
They have been chosen( at £535 a day fee) by David Cameron, though his close relations with News International must be considered by the inquiry.
There is no one representing the victims of hacking or officials of the National Union of Journalists to represent the foot soldiers who acted under commands from on high.
Also the terms of reference have been decided by the Prime Minister. How can the public have confidence in the “independence” of the inquiry?
The Culture and Media Select Committee criticisedformer Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman for taking a job with News International two months after retiring from the Met and shortly after he had cleared the News of the World of large scale hacking.
However it is notorious that there is a revolving door with ministers, senior civil servants and senior police getting jobs from big business including the media when they leave office, often businesses they have regulated and/or awarded lucrative contracts to when in office.
Pre Margaret Thatcher and New Labour there was a rule that ex office holders had to wait three years to take up positions with businesses they had dealings with in an official capacity. This cosy relationship was a contributory factor in the practices now being investigated.
The setting up, terms of reference and membership of public inquiries should be the responsibility of Parliament in open chamber and not left to the Government and ministers whose actions will often be subject to scrutiny.
