Arthur Varley; Army master tailor

Arthur Varley, who has died aged 83, was an Army master tailor who fitted kilts for thousands of soldiers and also kitted out the famous – including Prince Charles.

The former Gordon Highlander was the last Highland Regimental Tailor in the British Army and after a 24-year military career, serving under three distinct colours, he went on to become one of the world’s leading kiltmakers for Highland-based Hector Russell.
