Christopher Martin-Jenkins, who has died aged 67, was a cricket commentator, writer and a former president of the MCC. To his colleagues he was known as The Major. To his fans he was known simply as CMJ. he was widely respected as an eloquent, opinionated and often eccentric commentator on Test Match Special on BBC radio,.

He was born in Peterborough, the son of a father who was in shipping and a mother in medicine. Through school and university, he played both cricket and rugby, but by the time he graduated from Cambridge, he was already deputy editor of the Cricketer magazine.

He joined BBC Sport in 1970 and Test Match Special in 1972 and was part of the TMS team for the following 38 years. where he was widely popular. Later, he became president of the governing body of English cricket.

In 1981 he left the BBC to return to the Cricketer magazine as editor, although he still commentated on the game on television and radio as a freelancer. After three years, he returned to the BBC before moving to The Daily Telegraph as cricket correspondent in 1991 and then The Times in 1999. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2009. He is survived by his wife Judy, sons Robin and James and daughter Lucy.
