Actor and writer;
Born: January 6, 1933; Died: October 14, 2012
John Clive, who has died aged 79, was a quirky character and comedy actor who, when his acting career began to wane, made another career for himself as a best-selling writer.
He appeared in a number of successful British films, including The Italian Job and two of the Carry On comedies, and was the voice of John Lennon in the 1968 Beatles cartoon Yellow Submarine. He was also a regular on TV, including playing the eccentric professor of the title in the ITV children's series Robert's Robots (1973-74).
In The Italian Job (1969), the British heist movie, Clive played a greedy garage manager. Two years later he could be seen in an altogether more controversial role as Malcolm McDowell's tormentor psychotic in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of A Clockwork Orange.
He was born Clive Hambley in London but his family moved to Liverpool when he was a child. He left school at 14 and worked at the Shakespeare Theatre, Liverpool, before landing the title role there in The Winslow Boy. He made his television debut in the BBC Wednesday Play production Wear a Very Big Hat (1965), directed by Ken Loach, and was seen regularly in dramas and comedy.
As his acting career slowed Clive turned to writing thrillers, starting with the international bestseller KG200 (1977), about a secret Luftwaffe unit during the Second World War.
John Clive married Carole White in 1968, and they had a son and a daughter. The marriage broke up and in 2001 he married his second wife, Bryony.
