John Crichton; Grocer and politician

John Crichton, who has died aged 93, was a councillor and shopkeeper who helped breathe life back into the once thriving port of Leith after it fell into decline in the post-war years.

On a cold snowy day at the beginning of 1979, Crichton took Bruce Millan, the then Secretary of State for Scotland, for a walk along the waterfront at Leith. Crichton, a long-serving Leith councillor, wanted Millan’s support for a special project to regenerate the area.
