Lecturing and criticising thereafter took him further and further afield, with visits to Paris and Rome, Scandinavia and Mexico. The honorary professorship belatedly bestowed upon him was richly deserved.

Raymond Monelle, who has died aged 73, was a prominent, multi-sided member of Edinburgh University’s music faculty for more than 30 years, continuing aspects of his career with renewed intensity when he retired in 2002.
