Wislawa Szymborska

Wislawa Szymborska, who has died aged 88 in her sleep, was a Polish poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1996.

The award committee's citation called her the "Mozart of poetry", a woman who mixed the elegance of language with "the fury of Beethoven".
