AS part of the merry banter in the independence stakes, Alex Salmond described Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Lord Forsyth of Poll Tax as the "Bourbons of Scottish politics".

Of course, I knew he was referring to the European dynasty that was forever being chucked off the thrones of France, Spain and Italy. The royals who, as Alex said quoting Talleyrand, "had learned nothing and forgotten nothing".
