Tom Shields on … cull of the wild

In a previous life working for a couthy Sunday newspaper I was occasionally required to write under the byline The Nature Man.

The remit was to grill ghillies and gamekeepers about tales of nature red in tooth and claw.

I have an aversion to green ground and its resident wildlife. I hied myself not to the hills but to the natural history section of the Mitchell Library.
