Essay of the week: Why fat gypsy weddings are a feminist issue

‘Girls won’t give you a kiss straight away, so you’ve got to kind of beat them for the kiss.” It’s not the kind of comment you expect in the “no means no” climate of the United Kingdom, but it was made with no hint of shame last week by a traveller boy describing the practice of “grabbing” on Channel 4’s Big Fat Gypsy Weddings.

The series, which has gained the highest ratings for any Channel 4 show in years, has also featured several pieces of footage of the so-called courtship ritual of grabbing, which apparently allows boys to pull girls aside and kiss them, whether they’re interested or not.
