Alexander Dennis, the Falkirk-based bus builder, yesterday announced it had £15m orders in the pipeline for pioneering hybrid models that could help operators slash operating costs and carbon emissions.

The company said around 50 of the new Enviro buses, which combine conventional diesel with electrical energy, should take to the roads over the next 15 months.

Developed with BAE Systems, the buses reduce exhaust pollutants and greenhouse gases by 30%.

Chief executive Colin Robertson said test showed the buses allowed users to improve their miles per gallon performance by 40%.

The first 17 will go into operation in London shortly.
