After 20 years in the business, Wet Wet Wet may be more housewives' favourite than the stuff of schoolgirl crush - but that didn't stop the screaming at a tiny gig in a Glasgow music store yesterday.

Fans queued up from 8am to get their hands on one of 300 wristbands available for the show at Zavvi in Buchanan Street, and returned later in the day for a glimpse of the five as they submit to promotion duties for their comeback album Timeless.

Sisters Angela, 32, and Ann Marie Corbett, 35, and their cousin Gillian, 32, were not going to miss the show, having followed the band on their 26-date UK tour 11 years ago. Ann Marie, from Cumbernauld, said: "I was here at 8am to get the bands. I would say I am a totally devoted fan. I first saw them 20 years ago, and there is no way I was going to miss seeing them in Glasgow. I've grown up with them and still love their music."

When the band took to the stage, the crowd released themselves in cheers, claps and wolf whistles - no doubt aimed at Marti Pellow. The frenzy really began with the opening bars of Love Is All Around. He may have been performing on a shop floor, but there was no holding back as he belted out the words, gazing cheekily at his admirers.

Elizabeth McGlynn, 40, an ex-model of Paisley, said: "He's just beautiful. He's like Peter Pan and I call him my Thunder Lungs."

Pellow chatted happily while on stage and thanked the audience for their enthusiasm.
