Tinted moisturisers

 Make-up, so the theories suggest, is a mask for us to hide under. It’s about covering up what’s there and replacing it with something false – something we can shield ourselves with.

It’s all to do with society’s obsession with perfection, apparently. The theory goes that we’ve all been conditioned to believe that our own looks (whether you’re Kate Moss or Little Miss Normal) aren’t quite good enough.

So we slap on foundations, creams and concealers, then an array of brightly coloured powders that promise to give us an inner glow.

It’s only a theory though. You can wear as much make-up as you like, for any reason that takes your fancy. That said, I have been thinking of making a change in the name of seasonality.

The summer is a time for lightening up and that’s exactly what I intend to do: ditch the foundation in favour of something a little more translucent. The obvious choice (though it’s one I’ve had mixed feelings about in the past) is tinted moisturiser. It’s lighter, in texture though not necessarily in pigment, and creates a more natural look.

I’ll accept that tinted moisturiser isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It provides a lighter coverage than most foundations and doesn’t create that make-up mask some people like. On the other hand it does allow the natural glow from your skin to shine through.

As with all make-up products there are good and bad tinted moisturisers. These are my top picks: Aveda Mineral Tinted Moisturiser (£23.50); Mac Studio Moisture Tint (£20); Sisley Tinted Moisturiser (£61); Benefit You Rebel (£23.50).

Aveda 0870 034 2380; Mac maccosmetics.co.uk;

Sisley 0207 591 6380; Benefit 0901 113 0001.
