If you follow trends you’ll know that 90s grunge is everywhere at the moment.

Unfortunately grunge is a hard style to pull off without looking like a hobo. Baggy jeans, studded tops, flatform shoes and beanie hats all lend themselves well to this look, but there’s a fine line between rocking modern grunge and failing miserably with scruffy stonewashed denim and clumpy boots.

Thank goodness the 90s fashion we’re wearing now is only influenced by the decade rather than acting as an entire reproduction (the clothes I wore in the 90s were criminal not cool).

Here are some of my tips for wearing grunge well:

The Hat – loose natural hair teamed with a funky hat always adds something different to an everyday outfit. For 90s grunge style choose a patterned baseball cap or a slouchy slogan beanie. Everyone (including the Geordie Shore cast) has been spotted in black boater hats. Avoid the popular boater at all costs, however, if you want to be unique.

The Print – tartan and check are staple grunge patterns and most commonly worn in shirt form with ripped jeans and Doc Martins. It should be noted that chunky boots have had a fashion makeover themselves and are now available in a variety of colours, making them more stylish.  Focus on a dark colour palette of black, green, brown, maroon and navy.

The T-shirt – avoid anything with Nirvana emblazoned on the front. It’s way too obvious. Instead, mix feminine lace with studs and more masculine details to add a grunge edge to your outfit. Long sleeved lace detail tops are widely available and look great under a tough leather jacket. Think Kristen Stewart on a date with R-Patz. Alternatively, wear a band t-shirt supporting a lesser known act like Soundgarden or the Smashing Pumpkins.

The Jewellery – in every high street chain I see crosses. If you don’t feel entirely comfortable wearing a neon studded cross opt for a peace sign instead or something chunky and mechanical looking.

If in doubt pretend Kurt Cobain or Johnny Depp is boyfriend, listen to some Pearl Jam, dress effortlessly and the rest will work itself out.
