It appears variety is no longer the spice of life when it comes to shopping.

We’re being offered so much choice that it’s sending us into a buying frenzy. Shopping trips with friends are becoming less satisfying as we debate over an endless range of options, and impulse buys are on the up as we settle for something we’re not quite sure about.

Here’s how to to avoid making those bad purchases...

1. Write a list

You’ve probably heard it before but a clear list of things you need should stop you impulsively buying things that will gather dust in your wardrobe. It’s so easy to get distracted but stick to your list and you’ll return home with a sense of achievement - and cash in your wallet.

2. Don’t over shop

Visiting more than three shops for a basic items wastes time. If you find what you’re looking for in the first shop and it’s reasonably priced, buy it. Looking for ‘something better’ elsewhere only wastes time and inevitably you’ll end up in the shop you started in with sore feet and a disgruntled other half.

3. Do your research

Check out what’s available online before you go shopping. You’ll be more aware of which high street shops stock what you’re looking for, thus making your trip more productive and reducing the risk of disappointment. Keep your mind open to variations on a theme. For example, search for a ‘black dress’ rather than a ‘black dress with lace detail’. Searching this way will open your eyes to clothes you hadn’t considered before.

4. Try clothes on

If you have time always try things on before you leave the shop. Things will inevitably look different on the hanger so it’s important to make sure they suit your body shape before making a purchase. If you’re pushed for time make sure you keep the receipt and check the shop’s return policy before leaving.

5. Take footwear

If you’re shopping for an evening dress or occasion wear and don’t intend to buy new shoes then always take your own shoes with you. Don’t make the mistake of buying an evening gown without trying it with shoes first.
