This season’s artisan look suggests far away adventures, with references of Mexican Craftsmanship and Russian folklore. It’s relaxed, effortless glamour with a hint of ‘Sixties hippie’.

Photographs of Anita Pallenberg and Mick Jagger in the sixties illustrate beautifully the inspiration behind the autumn/winter ‘Global Traveller’ catwalk trend. It perfectly depicts their glamorous, bohemian, rock ‘n’ roll lifestyles with their worldwide travels being a major influence on their expressive style at that time.

A new take on boho styling, this trend is made up by a global mix of cultures. It creatively incorporates fur, psychedelic and ethnic prints, decadent metal embellishments, colourful textured knitwear, leather and fringing, as seen in the luxurious collections by Altuzarra, Fendi, Peter Som, Hermes, Missoni, Valentino and Emporio Armani. This look is perfect for Autumnal, cosy, considered, layering. There is something very thoughtful about this ‘global traveller’ trend. It seems to take us on a journey into our own world as travelling makes us dream. We are imagining that bustling market in Jakarta, that fiery sunset in Thailand or that mysteriously exotic riad in Marrakesh, the array of colours and textures that come to mind…this is fashion that evokes the dreamer within. I am always inspired by fashion that doesn’t conform. As a lover of the sixties and seventies I am attracted to free spirited, bohemian, feminine and intricately detailed design. Models epitomised the feeling created by these clothes, as they looked carefree, walking with their hands in their pockets parading effortlessly down the catwalk. The autumn/ winter catwalks lend the impression of this cosmopolitan globetrotter who takes her inspiration from the world, a stylish jet-setting traveller who has a rich wardrobe packed with the unique and beautiful pieces she picks up along the way. She takes inspiration from local craft traditions and exquisite workmanship native to the countries she visits. Hand beading and vibrant prints; decadent metalwork and unfamiliar colour clashes. Altuzarra created a lavish take on this worldly trend with Mongolian influences and references to Russian and Arabic dress in rich red and gold shades. His well travelled nomad was emulated by mixed ethnic prints, eclectic knitwear, fur trimmed coats and jangling gold coin embellishments. He effortlessly transports his audience into his own travellers’ day dream with his romantic folk inspired tales and modern day gypsy mystique. In a warmly muted, autumn colour palette, Karl Lagerfeld created a primitive meets luxurious collection for Fendi. An exotic exploration of fur and leathers with highlights such as shaggy multi-coloured fur coats, patchwork knits with goat hair woven into the mohair and leopard print silks and hosiery to create eclectic catwalk looks for the woman who could have anything and wants everything.
