Toughen up and rebel this autumn as the unconventional, dress down glamour of grunge at Saint Laurent meets the edgy, punk vibe at Versace.
The Autumn/Winter catwalks were symbolic of that anti-establishment, nonchalant look that shouts out effortless cool. The clothes on show were influenced by the look created in the 1970s by the high priestess of punk, Vivienne Westwood, who together with Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols laid the foundations of the movement's public image.

Versace gave us the fierce spirit of rebellion on the Milan catwalks. It's a fashion house that will be forever associated with the punk aesthetic, from Elizabeth Hurley in safety pinned perfection in the 1990s to this new revival which has a strong, sexy signature. Donatella has even titled her slick collection Vunk, alluding to a new punk aesthetic - a new edgy glamour. Although iconic punk features were referenced in the bondage straps, lacquered vinyl, tartan, studs, zips and silver chains the overall presentation was loud, fresh and new.
The Moschino Cheap and Chic collection gave us "punk goes couture". This was a collection that celebrated the youthful energy and anarchic attitude of punk but with a refined approach, creating a ladylike take on the trend. Dresses came with exaggerated ruffles at the hem, and a signature graffiti print appeared throughout the collection, while leopard print was layered in fur and silk. Light pink embellished shift dresses, shocking pink biker coats, studded blazers and the stand out punk staple of black and white stripes seen in a Mongolian fur jacket adorned the catwalk. Coats were oversized and dresses were low-waisted - make no mistake this punk was polished.
This year's Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art's costume exhibition in New York was dedicated to punk, with the media spotlight on celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Anne Hathaway and Cara Delevingne who were dressed accordingly at the Met Gala Ball in May. Fishnet, studded gowns and daring devore print dresses featured in a predominately monochrome palette.
