They say that behind every man is a woman wearing an outfit that subliminally corresponds to her husband's 2014 party conference speech.

Or at least they do for the Camerons, as yesterday the couple showed a strong solidarity with Samantha Cameron's frock apparently underlining David's party message.

In-keeping with the austerity measures her husband announced yesterday, including the offer of £7bn tax cuts, Mrs Cameron came clad to the Birmingham conference in a cut-price dress.

Her pale blue frock was from high-street retailer Hobbs, and currently costs £99 having been reduced from £149.

Her heels have had frequent appearances and hail from LK Bennett, a company beloved by many politicians' wives plus the younger generation of the Royals.

Mrs Cameron worked as the creative director of stationers Smythson of Bond Street until 2010. She now holds a part-time supervisory role with the company.

Also on display was Cameron's tattoo - a dolphin on her right ankle.
