Grandfather inspires Robbie's range

POP star, entertainer and now fashion designer, Robbie Williams has unveiled his new menswear clothing label, Farrell, in Glasgow.

Just hours before his solo gig at the city's Barrowland, the star appeared at House of Fraser on Buchanan Street to promote the range of military-inspired jackets and collarless shirts named after his grandfather, Jack Farrell.

Robbie said: "My first version of a man on this planet was my grandad. I've got his name tattooed on my wrist. He was from an era where even if you were working class you had a tailor and you wore a three-piece suit every day."He was in the Second World War and he worked down the pits and taught me how to box. He was a man's man and well worthy of the name and the brand."The range, designed by ex-Burberry menswear designer Ben Dickens, is described by Robbie as "Savile Row quality at high street prices". Prices range from £500 for a black leather jacket to £35 for a spotted silk scarf.The Take That singer said he had wanted to launch his own fashion label to diversify his career. He said: "I live in America where pop stars, actors and actresses all branch out into loads of different things and it was put to me by my management that maybe I wanted to put a clothing line together."Williams also released his new single Candy this week and said that although singing is still his full-time job, he is enjoying the process of owning and co-designing the Farrell fashion brand.He added: "More out of fear than anything, I've been thinking: well if you don't like the song I'll come and do this full time. This is what I fall back on and it's fun. I'm sure there's loads of ego stuff in there too – I've got my own brand. It's my own money – so stupid – and it means a good deal to me. It's my bit on the side that might take over from the other bit."
