PALE white domes tipped with golden trim, rounds of stiff navy fabric fashioned into flowers, giant metallic bows sitting proud on mannequins' heads - just a few of the fashion treasures on display in milliner William Chambers's first boutique.

Tucked away in the Italian Centre in Glasgow's Merchant City, the award-winning Scottish designer's shop officially opens its doors to customers today.

The boutique will sell Chambers' range of handmade designer millinery, which is currently stocked in top London department stores such as Harrods, Fenwick and Fortnum and Mason, as well as Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh.

"I want the shop to feel like a destination," said Chambers, who began creating hats in 2005.

Since then his designs have been worn by famous fashion names such as Anna Dello Russo and singer Roisin Murphy while in 2012 he took part in millinery exhibition event Hatwalk, which saw him design an enormous red rose headpiece for the Robert Burns statue in London.

Chambers hopes his boutique, which will open from Tuesday to Saturday, will become the city's go-to destination for hats.

He added: "There are other milliners and there are other hat stockists but I'm offering my point of view of what I think is modern millinery."

Worn by an array of society clients, including a guest at Prince George's christening last year, Chambers' designs range from classic flower-topped creations to more avant garde metallic headpieces.

Prices for his hats range from £150 to £950, for the high-end designs stocked in retailers such as Harrods.

Chambers, who also recently designed a collection of hats for high street brand Coast, hopes to be able to offer his customers more accessibly priced off-the-peg millinery from his new boutique.

He said: "I want to be able to offer my customer something like I used to when I started the business.

"I know the Glasgow customer is more savvy and she watches what she spends on items, so I want to offer that something else as well as the high end. Part of the reason to have the shop is to have something more accessible for customers."

The new premises also includes Chambers's workroom in the basement where he will work with a small team to create his collections.

He explained: "Every sample is made in here, in fact everything is made in here apart from the flowers, which we get couture made for us."

Chambers, who presents his biannual collections at milliner showcase Headonism in London, said the on-going support of acclaimed milliner Stephen Jones has been invaluable to him.

He said: "It all stems from Stephen Jones - he's been so supportive. Without Headonism, and without Stephen Jones and the British Fashion Council supporting what we do, we wouldn't be where we are."
