As runways go, some sights were familiar: a coquettish Cara, structured form providing models' curves and Karl Lagerfeld in shades.

Yet some were unfamiliar: hi-vis arm and knee pads, trainers teamed with gowns and hair styled like the trim on a Parka jacket.

Thanks to the contrast, no one could argue that Chanel's haute couture SS14 collection, launched todayat Paris Fashion Week, wasn't a talking point.

Eschewing fashion's love affair with heels, Lagerfeld sent models down the catwalk in sneakers and accessories that could only be described as sport-luxe (albeit in tones that perfectly complemented the outfits).

It wasn't all change, though. There were touches of the past referenced in looks, too: details that will always remain undeniably Chanel.

These details - the tweed, the famed white collar, the ladylike aesthetic - found themselves juxtaposed against thoroughly modern elements such as sheer panels, texture and bumbags.

Also noteworthy was models' distinctive make-up - will the double flick (black cat's eye on top, thick winged glitter on the bottom lashline) become a key trend for the year ahead?
