I will be amazed if the good weather continues long enough to give this recipe a go this weekend! I promise I planned it on a sunny day!

Most of us save strawberries for pudding but I say why wait when there is such a short window to get them in season? I approve of eating Scottish and British strawberries, ( only when the Scottish ones are done!). In a nutshell, if they are grown here and not flown here then I approve.

Driving in the countryside and seeing local farmers selling their fresh strawberries at the end of the road is such a pleasure. However, if you can’t then farmers markets will have punnets galore. Why eat strawberries in the winter when they taste like turnips? Wait until now and go crazy!

Some brilliant facts. Strawberries are the only fruit to have their seeds on the outside!

By the way there are 200 of them! They make your cheeks rosy and they help you burn more calories when exercising. Those who love strawberries are of a fun loving nature and those who don’t are just weird?

So come on, do you need any more excuses to go and get lots this weekend?

Scottish summer strawberry salsa

Half a red chilli, de-seeded

1tbsp of chopped basil, coriander and chives

Zest of half lime

A pinch of cracked pepper to taste

1 Chop the strawberries.

2 Add the zest of lime.

3 Fold through the herbs and chilli and season to taste.

This is delicious with sliced Mozzarella, drizzled with rapeseed oil and balsamic vinegar. It’s also a great side for a barbecue with grilled chicken, pork or lamb.

Go on, don’t leave the strawberries until pudding time.
