Holyrood 9A

9a Holyrood Road,

Edinburgh

What is it: One of the capital's original craft beer bars, Holyrood 9A has a loyal following and is known for some of the best burgers and beer in the Old Town. The decor hasn't changed much over the years; it's basic but comfortable, ensuring that the food and drink are stars of the show.

Interesting fact: There are loads of quotes on the walls from Voltaire, the French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher famous for his wit and his attacks on the established Catholic Church.

Verdict: Yes it's another beer and burger joint but Holyrood 9A was one of the first when it appeared in 2009 and has maintained high standards. Will this trend slow down? Probably but the best of the bunch will remain and this place is one of them. Knowledgeable, friendly staff.

Drink: A strong range of 25 draft beers (including nine guests), 40 bottled beers and 40 malt whiskies. I enjoyed a pint of Fyne Ales Jaryl for £3.60. Described as light and golden in colour with a strong citrus and hop aroma, it tasted damn good.

Food: You can't beat a good burger and with 14 to choose from here you are spoiled for choice. You must try the the Holyrood BBQ with a 6oz beef patty, smoked bacon, red onions, peppers, smoked applewood cheddar and barbecue sauce.

Prices: Good enough. Some places around here push them up because of the tourists - that's why you'll see more locals hanging around Holyrood 9A.

Alfresco: Didn't see any space out back but possibly room for a few tables out front on sunny days.

Children: Good for the kids but even better to enjoy a few beers with friends.

Perfect for: Heading here on a Sunday afternoon after a sociable Saturday night out for some true comfort food and drink.

Avoid if: You were looking for fine dining and mixology on your night out.
