Macgochans
Tobermory
Isle of Mull
What is it: Macgochans sits proudly in picturesque Tobermory on the Island of Mull. It was refurbished in February 2012 by owner Neil Morrison and designed by Ranold MacColl of Oban. The team here wanted to showcase the best of island hospitality and judging from my visit, they have certainly achieved this. There is a restaurant, function suite, a beer garden and the Bar-beag, where I spent most of my time. The décor retains a rustic Scottish feel mixed with modern touches such as natural wood and leather booths. I really liked the open barrel showcasing some great Single Malts.
Interesting fact: Imagine the locals' delight when during a regular open mic night in the pub, Eric Clapton turned up with his family for a few drinks. It got better, though, as old Slow Hand decided to take to the stage and show that he's still got what it takes. Many famous faces have enjoyed the hospitality here including former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, Blur singer Damon Albarn, ex-Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson and comedian Jim Davidson.
Verdict: This is everything a Scottish pub and restaurant should be: welcoming to visitors and the local community. It doesn't just rely on passing trade, but offers a constant stream of events and live music to keep the tourists and locals happy. This is the type of place I love discovering and sharing with people. First-class Scottish hospitality and service.
Drink: Good selection of local beers, ales and single malts. I had to have a Tobermory 10-year-old; whisky always tastes better when you are close to the distillery.
Food: They pride themselves on food caught, produced and reared on the isle of Mull. I really enjoyed the Tobermory seafood pie with local smoked salmon, haddock and Atlantic prawns in a creamy seafood sauce, served with fries and fresh leaf garnish and topped with puff pastry for £12.95.
Price: Very reasonable.
Alfresco: Fantastic beer garden out front with some wonderful views. If the weather's right it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
Children: Family-friendly here and staff make the kids more than welcome.
Avoid if: You prefer your city habitat.
Perfect for: Having a look around this beautiful part of the world then settling down for some great food, drink and live music.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
