The Howlin' Wolf

Bath Street

Glasgow

What is it: I remember when this place was The Monkey Bar which was once of the city's coolest hang-outs. Sadly it just didn't evolve and shut its doors after many years. The good news however is that that another animal - The Howlin' Wolf - has taken its place. Like most Bath Street bars, it's it's in the basement which fits perfectly with the old American Blues house feel. Pictures of 1950s blues and rock icons complement contemporary, reclaimed wood walls and red Chesterfield booths.

Interesting fact: Howlin' Wolf was the nickname of Chester Arthur Burnett, an influential African-American Chicago blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, from Mississippi.

Verdict: Live music and late opening every night, free entry, good soul food, great atmosphere ... what's not to like? Perfect for a bit of late-night fun.

Drink: Strong selection of craft beers and a surprisingly good cocktail list (bars like this often can't be bothered with the fancy drinks). I enjoyed the house cocktail, Howlin' Wolf - a proper rock'n'roll drink with spiced rum and cola, topped with a Guinness head, £6.50.

Food: Grub available from 11am until 2am! A soul food-inspired menu of five-hour roasted brisket of beef, veggie gumbo and the like. I really enjoyed my Cajun chicken pizza for £8.95.

Price: In line with the usual Bath Street prices, there are plenty of specials if you want to save a few pennies.

Alfresco: Small but perfectly formed area out front but don't bet on catching any rays in this basement venue.

Children: Kids welcome during the day for food.

Avoid if: You have delicate ears and want a quiet pint.

Perfect for: Getting down and dirty with some top live music.
