The Royal Mile

Edinburgh

What is it: Technically, you wouldn't describe this place as a speakeasy-style venue but it is certainly surreptitiously tucked away down a narrow alley just off the Royal Mile, much like the imbibing dens of the 1920s. A canopy of tiny lights illuminates the alley, coercing you in, followed by a set of stairs which lead into the small but perfectly formed bar area before arriving in the larger dining area. The lighting is dim and the decor combines shabby chic furniture with contemporary Scottish twists such as the odd splash of funky tartan and stag's heads murals.

Interesting fact: The Royal Mile is actually longer than today's mile by 107 yards, which is the length of the old Scots mile which was replaced by the English mile after the union.

Verdict: When I visited last I was with a group of Russians who were demanding to say the least. The staff were excellent and coped effortlessly with the group's requests – which were at points slightly odd (one guest wanted three main courses and dessert at the same time). The bar staff also made some excellent drinks and seemed to actually enjoy their job, something not always apparent in other Edinburgh establishments.

Drinks: Great old-school drinks list. I opted for a refreshing and crisp rum daiquiri for £6.90 which consisted of Bacardi Superior rum, lime juice, sugar syrup and Fee Brothers peach bitters.

Food: Excellent, and, in all honesty, more cutting-edge than I had anticipated. I had the John Dory fillet for £16.50 with sea clams which was aromatic and perfectly seasoned.

Price: Not bad. Cocktails from £6.90 and a glass of wine from £4.20.

Alfresco: Just out in the alley, although I believe there may be some seats out front, if we ever get a summer.

Children: Allowed to dine with adults.

Avoid if: You like your bars open, bright and flooded with natural light.

Perfect for: A intimate dinner for two then some great cocktails.
