The State Bar
The State Bar
Holland Street
Glasgow
What is it: A classic pub just off lively Sauchiehall Street. Although a typical-looking local from the outside, The State is steeped in interesting Glasgow theatre history due to its proximity to the King's Theatre. The huge circular bar complements the theatre posters, and pictures of old stage stars look down from the walls.
Interesting fact: The State has a good reputation for comedy. In recent years it took its foot off the pedal but now it is back with regular comedy nights. The bar has a show every Saturday night, which they say has an almost jazz club atmosphere.
Verdict: My family owned "proper" pubs on the west coast of Scotland for years and I also worked in a few myself, so I know the difference between a boozer and a pub. The State is a pub, complete with friendly staff and regulars, a decent beer selection, and a comfortable and classic interior with its own unique eccentricities. It's a great place to soak up some Glasgow atmosphere before or after a show and the turns regularly pop in.
Drinks: Good beer (seven taps) and whisky selection. I had a pint of Staropramen for a reasonable £3.50.
Food: Pub grub. I had a decent curry and rice for just under £7. Can't argue with that.
Price: Ales from £3.
Alfresco: Just out on Holland Street.
Children: More of a place for grown-ups.
Avoid if: You were treating your partner to a fancy night out.
Perfect for: A post-show dram.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
