The Canny Man's

The Canny Man's

237 Morningside Road

Edinburgh

What is it? The Canny Man's has been going since 1871. From the outside it just looks like an ordinary pub, but step inside and it is anything but. This pub has legendary status all over Edinburgh probably due to its "like it or lump it" attitude. Outside there is a sign that reads: "No mobiles, no credit cards, no backpackers, no cameras." Inside, the décor is eclectic with weird instruments, military uniforms, paintings, swords, prams and even a boat on show.

Interesting fact: Legendary landlord Watson Kerr passed away in September 2011, with one obituary describing him as an "extraordinary Edinburgh publican". His no-nonsense approach gave The Canny Man's a notoriety that stretched far beyond the boundaries of Edinburgh. This small family-run bar has also catered to many dignitaries and celebrities over the years - celebrated seafood chef Rick Stein has called the Canny Man's the best pub in the world.

Verdict: I've heard this described as a bit of a "Marmite" pub, which is probably a good description. It's a place for locals and you need to be accepted to properly feel at home - but I like that it's old school.

Drinks: Apparently famous for its Bloody Marys and also has a great selection of ales and malts. I had a lovely pint of Deuchars IPA.

Food: Classic food with a quirky twist, with a decent seafood offering. I enjoyed the smoked salmon garnished with prawns and cocktail mayonnaise for a reasonable £8.95.

Price: Bit pricey in places, but I suppose it keeps the "riff raff" out. Pints from £3.50.

Alfresco: I didn't see it, but I believe there is a small beer garden out the back - probably just for regulars …

Children: I didn't see any kids here when I visited.

Avoid if: You're a backpacker with a camera.

Perfect for: Having a wee dram, knowing that no-one will bother you.
