Drygate Brewery

Drygate Brewery

85 Drygate

Glasgow

What is it: This brewery is a joint venture between the C&C Group (producer of Tennent's lager) and the craft brewers Williams Bros Brewing Co. The venue is in Glasgow's East End on the grounds of the Wellpark Brewery in a converted 1930s box factory. The space has been transformed to hold a craft brewery, bar and restaurant, event space for more than 300 punters, beer garden and an amazing terrace overlooking the city. You have a great view of the beer production sitting in the bar and restaurant, and the decor is industrial which makes you feel part of the whole process.

Interesting fact: Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H&R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge by Hugh and Robert Tennent. His sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J&R Tennent from 1769.

Verdict: When I first moved to Glasgow I lived up the road from here so it makes me so happy to see all the recent development in the East End. The venue is stunning in an industrial sort of way but still manages to feel comfortable. The staff were on the ball and you can tell they have been well trained and, most importantly, they had a smile on their faces. I hope East End folk come and enjoy it and not just West End hipsters wanting to feel edgy.

Drinks: They are hoping to make one million litres of beer a year and they have 24 taps on offer and around 200 types of beers sourced from around the world. I loved the Williams Bros Black Ball Stout, priced at £3.75.

Food: Brought to you by the same team as The Vintage in Leith, so you know it's not going to disappoint. I had the pulled pork burrito with smoked tomato, lettuce & kidney bean for a very reasonable £7.

Price: Good prices. Pints from £3.50. Also 2/3 pints on offer.

Alfresco: The best roof terrace in Glasgow.

Children: Kid friendly.

Avoid if: You prefer your bars and restaurants a bit more cosy

Perfect for: Enjoying the best beer around.
