Hyde Bar

Hyde Bar

9-17 & 21 Partick Bridge Street,

Glasgow

What is it: The much hyped Hyde Bar and restaurant has been open for around six months in a quiet corner of Glasgow's west end. The venue makes up the ground floor of a fashionable development of plush apartments, or flats as we used to call them, and has large windows that invite you inside. It is made up of three areas: the bar, restaurant, and a cool mezzanine for dining. The space is open and airy but without feeling like a warehouse. The modern decor may not be to everyone's taste but there are stylish touches including a massive black metal tree which holds premium bottles of vodka and Champagne.

Interesting fact: The place name Partick is derived from the Cumbric word for thicket. The early inhabitants of Strathclyde were speakers of this Old Welsh dialect.

Verdict: What they have tried to do here is bring a bit of style to Glasgow's west end. The decor is not really my thing but I can understand why folk would appreciate this kind of style. The staff were friendly and really helpful. There may have been a slight confidence issue with making the cocktails but they got there and they tasted fine. This place is giving the west end another option to the regular pubs and that's got to be a good thing.

Drinks: The cocktail list is innovative with a section of craft beer cocktails. I had a Blueberry Bramble which is a twist on a classic bramble with gin, lemon, sugar and Crème de Myrtille, which was pretty good and priced at £6.75

Food: Crowd pleaser of a menu. I enjoyed a Signature Burger which was tasty, and very reasonable for £7.95.

Price: More expensive than the surrounding pubs but the offering is better. Please get rid of the generic promotions blackboards though.

Alfresco: Seats out the front when the sun is out.

Children: Kid friendly for dining.

Avoid if: You are a pint and a packet of crisps guy.

Perfect for: Stopping in for a couple of cocktails while on the west end circuit.
