El Cartel

El Cartel

64 Thistle Street

Edinburgh

What is it: This "Casera Mexicana" (home-made Mexican) bar and restaurant opened just last week on the cobbles of Edinburgh's Thistle Street. It is owned by the same trailblazer that owns The Bon Vivant and is also handily right across the street from the multi-award-winning bar and restaurant. What was a pretty tacky Tex-Mex style takeaway has been transformed into a modern yet authentic Mexican hang-out. It is small but perfectly formed, only seating around 25.

Interesting fact: Mezcal is becoming more and more popular among the top bartenders. It is produced in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, from several varieties of agave, but not blue agave, which is used for its brother Tequila. It has a smoky, almost meaty character, a result of the plants being cooked in ground pits.

Verdict: There are Mexican street food-style places opening all the time. Thing is, though, they are usually part of a chain or just downright tacky. El Cartel is the real deal. You can tell the owner has sampled the true essence of what these places stand for - relaxation, fun and authenticity. The staff are passionate - a must-visit venue.

Drink: There are some great bartenders working here who can make anything you desire. They obviously focus on premium Tequila and Mezcal, with Margaritas and twists on classic drinks using Mexico's national spirit. I really enjoyed my Paloma: Reposado tequila, lime, a pinch of salt and topped with grapefruit soda, for £4.50.

Food: A simple menu with dishes such as, "jalapeno bombers", plantain and chorizo fritters. I went for the chicken taco with mole poblano, pico de gallo and crema for £6.

Price: Good prices here.

Alfresco: No space for sitting on the narrow Thistle Street.

Children: Not sure the kids would appreciate the spices.

Avoid if: You were looking for an open and airy venue.

Perfect for: Having a few drinks across the road in the Bon Vivant then heading here to finish off the night in style.
