IN general, matching wine to salads is fairly easy.

Pick a Sauvignon blanc, a dry Riesling or a Pinot Grigio and you won't go wrong. But by looking at the individual ingredients you can be more specific and end up with a perfect match.

For example, the goat's cheese element in Geoff's recipe is simply crying out for a nice Sancerre. And with the second recipe, try a Malagousia from Greece to complement the olives and feta. If there is a fish or seafood element to your salad, open a Muscadet Sur Lie for a perfect pairing. If you prefer a full-flavoured salad, you can raise the stakes in wine terms too, choosing a new world Chardonnay or a light red such as a Beaujolais.

Here are a few to look out for this weekend.

Sancerre Les Ruettes 2014 (M&S, £14.50). This is a well-balanced wine with decent up-front fruit and a mouth-watering acidity making it the perfect choice for Loire purists as well as lovers of the new world style. The rosé from the same producer is also excellent, and the ideal choice with a traditional Caesar salad.

Ktima Gerovassiliou Malagousia 2013 (Inverarity One to One, £15.99). Evangelos Gerovassiliou is a wine-making genius and his Malagousia is a must for wine lovers everywhere. It's beautifully dry and aromatic, undeniably cool and a guaranteed talking point over the dinner table.

Beaujolais Domaine Romy 2014 (Majestic, £9.99). One of my all-time favourite wines from Beaujolais, this is the very definition of gluggable. It's beautifully light, fresh and pure and perfect for enjoying in the back garden with a nice salad in the summertime.
