The delicacy was voted as the cake the nation couldn't live without in a poll by Dobbies Garden Centre, beating lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge, chocolate and cupcakes.
The poll was held to celebrate the garden centre's involvement in Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, September 27.

Anthony Hester, Head of Restaurants at Dobbies, said: "Dobbies restaurants are renowned for our appetising afternoon teas as well as our fabulous home-baking, and with our involvement in Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning next week, coupled with baking fever sweeping the nation, we wanted to discover what classic cake the British public can't live without.
"The results couldn't be sweeter. It's interesting to see that carrot cake was voted as the number one cake the nation can't live without - perhaps our customers like to make this British classic with ingredients they've grown in their back garden!"
Dobbies will also be trying to sell more than 4,500 Macmillan themed cupcakes in its restaurants in just eight hours to raise money for the charity.
Mr Hester added: "We are delighted to be supporting Macmillan for the fifth consecutive year and helping raise valuable funds for people living with cancer."
