A distillery has teamed up with one of the world's best known wineries to produce an exciting new range of Scotch whiskies.

Glenglassaugh Distillery's new Massandra Connection Single Cask Series comprises of five different single malt whiskies which have been finished in casks that were previously used for fine wines.

The new range was made possible through an exclusive deal with Massandra, the world renowned Crimean winery which specialises in fortified and dessert wines.

Only 1,349 bottles of single malt have been produced from the five casks which were used.

Stuart Nickerson, managing director of distillery, which is based near Portsoy in Aberdeenshire, said: “Each of the casks has helped our single malt whisky to develop its own exclusive, distinctive character while still retaining the award winning qualities for which Glenglassaugh is rightly very highly regarded. This range is unique and each of the styles has its own distinct identity.

“While using ex-wine or sherry casks to finish whisky is nothing new, we believe that this is the first time that a distillery has been able to use Crimean wine casks in this process. Previously, the Massandra Winery would use their casks until physical exhaustion and this is the first time that they have allowed the casks to be used outside of the winery.

“We are very excited by the results, and we believe that there will be an incredible demand for the very limited collection of bottles that we have available.”

The single casks, named aleatico, sherry, muscat, red port and maderia style finish, follow hot on the heels of the launch of Revival – the first single malt Scotch whisky to be produced by Glenglassaugh since the distillery recommenced production, following a break of 22 years, in 2009.
