First taste

For an authentic taste of traditional German cakes, gateaux, tarts and breads this is the place to go. Konditormeister - the highest qualification for a pastry chef in Germany - Falko combines traditional methods and the finest ingredients. The wait for a table is worth it whether you're there for a toasted brioche breakfast, a light lunch or the simple pleasure of coffee and cake. There are interesting German artifacts all around and it's worth taking a moment to see how each loaf is wrapped lovingly like a gift. It's a joy to watch.

One slice or two?

Gateaux and layered cakes (black forest; chocolate truffle cream; choux pastry and cranberry …) and deep-filled tarts (pear and raspberry; cherry almond; apricot; chocolate orange; lemon …) are among the beautiful baked goods crafted to perfection at the bakery in Gullane. Average price is £4.50 per slice.

Critic's choice

The nut nougat gateau - layers of hazelnut sponge filled with almond-nougat cream and topped with hazelnut marzipan - is a glorious balance of texture and flavour. Try it with a pot of almond tea.
