First taste

Once a dark, low-ceilinged snooker hall, Strathaven Gallery is now a beautifully renovated creative space with exposed brickwork, wooden beams and an abundance of light. Opened two years ago by Lucy Dawson, it showcases the work of several local artists, sold alongside a range of high-end gifts. Sipping a cup of Eteaquet tea at one of the magnificently crafted wooden tables whilst surrounded by so much artistic passion and talent is a rather lovely, and somewhat inspiring, experience.

One slice or two?

A pretty coffee counter edged with pastel bunting displays a lovely selection of home baking produced by Gillian Sutherland. Bakewell cake, Bounty bar cupcakes, Bavarian butter cookies, Victoria sponge (both the raspberry jam and lemon curd varieties) peppermint slice, banana and almond sponge, strawberry tarts, meringues and scones with jam and clotted cream are regular favourites. Average price is £2.50.

Critic's choice

A slice of the Caribbean cake (vanilla sponge layers filled with pineapple conserve and topped with toasted coconut dusted buttercream) served with a pot of white peony tea (with its subtle hint of melon) offers a delightfully evocative taste of faraway shores.
