Former Dr Who star Louise Jameson has joined the cast of River City as a vivacious hairdresser.

The actress, also known for roles as Blanche Simmons in Tenko and Rosa Di Marco in EastEnders, will play Viv Roberts, a character renowned for having extra-marital affairs.

She arrives in Shieldinch intending to settle down after travelling the world and is interested in buying the hairdressing salon owned by Shirley Henderson, played by Barbara Rafferty. Sandra MacIver, River City executive producer, said she was "delighted".

She added: "Viv is a breath of fresh air to Shieldinch and when she's not cheekily eyeing up Tall Ship landlord Raymond Paul Samson, she is secretly signing new best pal Shirley up for internet dating. One thing's for sure, life will never be dull when Viv is around - she's the life and soul of any party."

Jameson's first appearance in the drama will be broadcast on April 1.
