Alex Rae has revealed he would be interested in succeeding John Hughes as Falkirk manager. Rae began his senior professional career at Brockville and spent two- and-a-half successful seasons there before moving to Millwall in 1990.
The 39-year-old, who spent two years in charge at Dundee before leaving the post last October, is one of a number of names being linked with the Falkirk vacancy following Hughes' appointment as Hibernian manager on Monday.
The Falkirk board met last night to draw up a shortlist and Rae hopes his name will be on it. "I would like to think the Falkirk board would consider interviewing me for the position," he said. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a player there and the chance to go back would be very tempting.
"A lot has changed, of course, since I was a player there with the new stadium, the successful youth academy, and a chance to play in Europe next season, and I would like to be given the opportunity to take the club forward.
"I know there are a lot of other names being mentioned so I will just need to see if they decide I am the right man for the job or not."
George Craig, Falkirk's managing director, revealed he has been thinking about Hughes' possible successor for some time. Hughes had been linked with jobs at Blackpool and Swansea City in recent months, prompting Craig to start planning for life without him.
"When John has been making noises, as he has been in the past few months, that it was maybe time for him to spread his wings then, obviously, I started to realise I may be looking for a new manager quite soon," he said. "I've been aware of this, so it's now my job to start going forward for the club.
"First and foremost, we have got to protect John's legacy here, the infrastructure that we've built up. He would be the first to say we could not have enjoyed sustained success here at Falkirk without the infrastructure.
"Going on from there, we need to find someone who can come in and take us on, developing in a way that the supporters are happy with. Given how established we are as an SPL club, I'm sure I won't be short of candidates."
Meanwhile, Motherwell have reacted angrily to the suggestion that they have approached the agent of Ian McCall, the Partick Thistle manager, to take over at Fir Park.
Mark McGhee is set to be unveiled as Aberdeen manager later this week but John Boyle, the Motherwell owner, refuted stories that the search for McGhee's successor had already begun. He said: "We are in discussions with no-one regarding Mr McCall."
