Showered with prizes in its native Germany, Chris Kraus's drama offers bleak, intense viewing. Monica Bleibtreu is the aged Miss Kruger, who teaches piano at a women's prison. When inmate Jenny von Loeben (Hannah Herzsprung) turns out to be gifted, Kruger sees a chance to live out her own professional fantasies. Bleibtreu impresses as the prim teacher alternately enamoured and enraged by her pupil, but Herzsprung's performance becomes increasingly overheated as the end approaches.
