Frequently Asked Questions

1.    Why are you charging users to access your site and the content in your apps ?

Access to the site will remain free and you will be able to read 10 articles every month for no charge.

If you would like to read more, we're asking that you help support quality online journalism by Scots and for Scots by paying a small amount.

2.    Why can't advertising cover your costs?

Basically because there isn't enough advertising money around, particularly when so much of it is consumed by the likes of Google.  So we need advertising and subscription to allow us to invest in the product to ensure we provide first class news and commentary for our users throughout Scotland.

3.    So how much does it cost  ?

For the website :   just £1* for your first 4 weeks if you're a new subscriber, thereafter it’s from £2.99 per 4 weeks.  Annual subscriptions are available from £35.  That's about 10 pence a day, fantastic value by any standard!  Click here to subscribe now.

For the web and mobile app package it's £1 for the first four weeks and then  £3.99 after that, and for the web and tablet package, £1 for the first four weeks and then £4.99 after that.

4.    How do I subscribe?

Click here to subscribe and see the full range of subscription options.  You can choose to subscribe to web only, web and mobile app, web & tablet app or all 3 on a monthly or annual package.

Your subscription renews automatically every 4 weeks or annually, until you cancel.

If you've chosen one of the app options then you can now download the app for free from the Apple app store or Google play store and use your subscription details to access the content.

5.  I already subscribe to heraldscotland.com how do I upgrade to one of the apps  ?

Just sign in and go to the subscriptions page.  There you'll be able to select the package that's right for you and upgrade.

6.    I only want to access Herald Puzzles.

Subscription to Herald Puzzles is now included with unlimited subscription.

If you have an existing crossword subscription, simply sign-in with your existing details.  You will also get unlimited access to the upgraded heraldscotland.com. This will continue as per your current subscription until you cancel.   Your crossword subscription details will not appear under 'subscription details' within 'my account' as it's a separate account which you manage via Paypal.

Please note puzzles are only available on your PC. You will not be able to access these on a mobile or tablet.

If you wish to cancel your puzzles subscription, please contact paypal.

It is important that you don’t change your email address within your heraldscotland account, as you will not be able to access crosswords.   If you need to change your email address, close your existing account and open a new one with your new email address.

7.    Can I share my access?

I'm afraid not.  Obviously if we allowed shared access it would be open to abuse, so it's a particular rule that subscription is for just 1 person and isn't transferable.

If we notice any peculiar activity we may have to suspend the account, but that's not a step we'll take without contacting you first.

8.    I want to cancel my subscription.

You can cancel your subscription at any time up until 12 hours before your current subscription renews.  Simply sign in and select ‘Cancel my subscription’ within the ‘my account’ section.

If your card details have changed, simply cancel your current subscription and set up a new subscription with your new card details.

If we've tried to charge your card and have been unsuccessful due to your card details changing or expiring, we will notify you.

10.  When does my current subscription expire?

Your subscription is a rolling contract, your card will be charged every 4 weeks if you chose a 4 week contract, or yearly if you chose an annual contract.

If you wish to cancel your subscription, you can do so at any time up until 12 hours before your current subscription renews.  Log in to ‘my account’ and choose ‘Cancel my subscription’.

11.  How do I renew my subscription?
